Preparing Your Pet for Firework Celebrations
The 4th of July is a day of celebration for America and what better way to celebrate our Nation’s birthday than by lighting up the night sky. This can be a very exciting time for adults and children alike, but not so much for our beloved pets. Loud noises like fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away or cower in a corner or under a piece of furniture. By practicing precaution you and your pets can all have a safe and happy celebration.
• Make sure that your pet has ID tags with a current contact phone number if they happen to escape. Also, make sure that if they
have a microchip that the information is updated and correct.
• Take a snap photo of your pet if the need arises that you need help to locate your escapee.
• Make sure that the area is secure. If you are outdoor with your pet, make sure that they are leashed or in a fenced in area. If
you are inside, make sure to block any dog doors or areas where they could potentially escape or hurt themselves.
• Turn on the television or a radio when the fireworks are set to begin. The background noise will help to muffle the sound of
the fireworks.
• Create a safe space or room. Allowing your pet to be in a comfortable area away from the booms and flashes will keep them calm
and give them a sense of security.
• If you do take your pet to a celebration, please do not leave them in the car while the family enjoys the celebration as this
will make more them even more nervous.
• After the firework celebration make sure that all debris is cleaned up as the remnants can be harmful to your pet if stepped on
or swallowed.
• If possible, it is best to leave your pet at home of traveling to a firework celebration.
Pets don’t understand why there are loud noises or what a celebration even is, and though we as pet owners want to keep them part of the family, these celebrations can lead to anxiety and nervousness that can leave a negative and lasting impact on your pet.
