Is a Shih Poo for You?
These designer puppies are a hybrid of two of America’s favorite breeds- the Shih Tzu and the Toy or Miniature Poodle. In addition to their strikingly good looks, their inherited behavioral traits from both parent breeds will assure a clever and spirited little dog that is playful, friendly and has no shortage of affection.
Their sweet and loyal nature makes them ideal companions, yet their intelligence partnered with a bit of a stubborn streak can make them difficult to train. They are not ideal for a first time pet owner or someone who is away a lot as they crave attention and the warmth of a lap.
Shih Poo Health and Maintenance
Just like all dogs, you little one will require a yearly well visit to the veterinarian for a physical and necessary vaccinations. Shih Poos are known to develop joint problems with hips and knees that generally form in their older years due to their size. These pups are also prone to heart disease, epilepsy, anemia, disc disease and frequent ear infections, so be sure your vet checks for these regularly. Some Shih Poos may also exhibit problems with their teeth if proper care and attention is not given to them. Regular cleanings and brushing will help to prevent tooth decay and loss.
Getting daily exercise in the form of a brisk walk or active play and high quality foods in addition to regular check-ups and cleanings will assure your Shih Poo lives a long and healthy life.
Will having a Shih Poo affect my allergies?
Shih Poos are frequently marketed as hypoallergenic because of their poodle lineage. However, it is important to recognize that there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. What can be said, about the Shih Poo is that there is very minimal shedding if any at all, which means that there will be far less pet dander than a dog that it not considered “hypoallergenic”. There is no test that can be given to see if you will suffer from sharing a home with a Shih Poo so it is recommended to spend some time with one before adopting. It may also be a good idea to invest in a HEPA air filter to be better protected from pet dander and other allergens.
Temperament and Personality Traits
Though social in nature, they can also be quiet and quite shy with strangers. Proper socialization at an early age will give them the confidence that they need to be comfortable in most environments and with most people. And despite their size, they make for excellent watch dogs. Always on alert and wanting to protect their humans, this pup will be sure to let you know when anything is out of the ordinary. They are great with people of all ages, though it is best not to leave them unsupervised with small children as their size makes them very delicate.
