Ideas For Your Puppy When He Is Home Alone

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Your pup misses you as much as you miss him when you’re away. Unfortunately, most of us must work and are not home eight to ten hours a day. Alone time for a pup can cause him separation anxiety and, in some cases, lead to destructive behavior. You need to remember; your pup adores you and wants you by his side day and night!

Although all dogs need your time, love, care, and attention, there are certain breeds that tend to do better than others when left alone. Those breeds include the Yorkshire Terrier, French Bulldog, and Maltese. They generally adapt better and self-entertain themselves when alone.

Below are a few basic tips to help your puppy adjust to being home alone:

Hire a dog walker, even a day or two each week while you are at work. A brief fifteen-minute walk midday will allow your puppy to burn off some energy as well as socialize with the walker. Many dog walkers are reasonably priced and will provide your pup with love and great attention.

Provide mentally stimulating toys for your pup. It is suggested that these specific toys are given to him right before you leave and are put away once you arrive home. This will allow the toy to be something he looks forward to and finds comfort in when alone.

Leave the TV or radio on for mental stimulation. The sound will help to prevent your fur-ever friend from feeling isolated and alone. A calm TV network, such as a news network, is suggested.

Leave one of your old sweaters out for him. Pups have a great sense of smell and love cuddling up on something that is soft smells like his best friend.

For pet owners who have the means, consider a buddy for your puppy and adopt a second pet. Puppies such as the Maltese, Cavalier King Charles, French Bulldog, and the Bichon Frise tend to get along well with other dogs.

Consider a two-way audio-video pet camera system and check in with your puppy. These cameras are generally not expensive and will allow you to check in on your puppy right from your cell phone. He will be very happy to see you and hear your voice throughout the day.

If time allows, take your pup for a walk or engage in physical activity with him before leaving. This will allow him to burn off some energy and be more relaxed.
