  1. The Bichon Frise is derived from the French name, “Curly Haired Lap Dog”.

 

“Bichon” is a French word that describes a type of lap dog and “Frise” is the French word for “curly”. The Bichon Frise isn’t the only one who sports such a fancy title however – similar breeds like Maltese and Havanese dogs are also considered bichons.

It is said, that King Henry III was so captivated by his Bichon Frises that he often carried them in a basket that hung around his neck. In fact, the idea of pampering these little ones became so popular among the people of France that the French verb, “Bichonner”, was introduced to mean a beautiful and well pampered Bichon.

These dogs found their way from the Mediterranean region to the Canary Islands, specifically to the Island of Tenerife in what is believed to be as early as the 1300’s. They are believed to be the traveling companions of Spanish sailors, who may have even used them as items of barter.
